Robert Smithson's most famous work. When built, the lake sat at 4,195 feet above sea level, and in 1970 the coil was just inches above the waterline. This month the lake is at around 4,189 feet. Five feet doesn't seem like much, but to restore the lake to the lake's healthy height of 4,198, they'd have to add one million acre-feet of water per year for eight years. Saving the lake would mean drowning the art. His widow, Nancy Holt, was my meditation teacher years ago. She moved to New Mexico in 1994. She came here more than twenty years after Smithson's death in a light aircraft crash. He and the pilot were checking out the site of another work, Amarillo Ramp. Holt went on to complete Amarillo Ramp herself, with Richard Serra and Tony Shafrazi.
